Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.


“ ‘This will be the sign to you which will come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: In one day, they will both die.


The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am doing something in Israel which will make both ears ring of everyone who hears it.


In that day I will bring about against Eli everything which I have spoken with regard to his house, from beginning to end.


The man said to Eli, “I am he that came out of the army, and I fled today out of the battle line.” And he said, “What is the word, my son?”


When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate. And his neck broke and he died, for he was an old and heavy man. And he had judged Israel forty years.
