5 So David arose and came to the place where Saul had camped. And David saw the place where Saul was lying down and Abner son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying down in the encampment, while the people encamped around him.

So Abner returned to Hebron, and Joab pulled him aside in the gateway so as to speak with him undisturbed. There he struck him in the midsection so that he died on account of the blood of Asahel, his brother.


Ner fathered Kish; Kish the father of Saul; Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.


So David rose up early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper. And he carried away the provisions and went as Jesse had commanded him. And when he came to the encampment, the army was going out to the battle line, and they shouted a war cry.


When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Whose son is this youth, Abner?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”


And David sent out spies and knew that Saul had certainly come.


Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
