He gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar will be torn apart, and the ashes that are upon it will be poured out.’ ”


“Arise therefore and go to your own house. When your feet enter the city, the child will die.


And this will be a sign to you: You will find the Baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”


And it will be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you.


Yet the one I do not cut off from My altar will be spared so your eyes will not stop weeping or your soul grieving. All the increase of your house will die in their prime.


In that day I will bring about against Eli everything which I have spoken with regard to his house, from beginning to end.


Now the ark of God was taken, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.


The messenger replied, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there also has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead. And the ark of God is taken.”


She named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory is departed from Israel,” because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.


She said, “The glory is departed from Israel, for the ark of God is taken.”
