1 Kings 3:1 - Modern English Version

1 Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He married Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace, the house of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem.

Nevertheless, David overthrew the stronghold of Zion, which is now the City of David.


But King Solomon loved many foreign women in addition to the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites,


So David slept with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.


In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Ziv (which is the second month), he began to build the house of the Lord.


Solomon was building his own house for thirteen years, and he finished all his house.


His own house where he lived, in the other court back of the hall, was similar in style. Solomon also made a house like this for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken as a wife.


When Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord and the king’s house and all else he desired,


When twenty years had passed since Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king’s house


But Pharaoh’s daughter moved out of the City of David to her house which Solomon had built for her, and he then built Millo.


Then David dwelt in the stronghold, which is why they called it the City of David,


Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he married into the family of Ahab.


And Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh from the City of David to the house that he built for her, for he said, “My wife will not live in the house of David king of Israel, for the places where the ark of the Lord have been are holy.”


“Thus they returned us an answer, saying, “ ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are rebuilding the temple that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and completed.


should we again break Your commandments and intermarry with the people of these abominations? Would You not become so completely angry with us that there would be no remnant, nor any who escape?


The children who are born of them may enter the assembly of the Lord in their third generation.
