As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not looked for you, and when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made the kingdom and nation swear that they could not find you,


When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Are you he that troubles Israel?”


So Ahab called out all the Israelites and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.


Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone remain a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets number four hundred and fifty men.


Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.


When Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them in groups of fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water.)


And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, Lord of Hosts, because the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek to take my life.”


Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.”


And behold, a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “Thus says the Lord: Have you seen this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.”


The prophet came to the king of Israel and said, “Go, strengthen yourself and prepare, and see what you do, for next year the king of Aram will come up against you.”


Speaking in the word of the Lord, a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him.


And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we can inquire of the Lord. But I hate him because he never prophesies good for me, but always evil.” And Jehoshaphat said, “Let not the king say so.”


He said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he made him ride in his chariot.


“Nevertheless they became disobedient, and rebelled against You, and cast Your law behind their backs, and killed Your prophets who had warned them to turn back to You. But they committed terrible provocations.


It is time for You, O  Lord, to act, for they have broken Your law.


My zeal has consumed me, because my enemies have forgotten Your words.


I have declared my ways, and You answered me; teach me Your statutes.


for zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen upon me.


for their heart was not steadfast toward Him, nor were they faithful in His covenant.


You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them who hate Me,


(for you shall not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),


Then I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity, yet surely the justice due to me is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.”


In vain I have smitten your children; they received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.


But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But the Lord hid them.


Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he eagerly followed after vanity.


You observe the statutes of Omri, and every practice of the house of Ahab, and you walk in their counsels. Therefore I will give you over to destruction, and the inhabitants to derision. You will bear the contempt of My people.


The godly has perished from the earth, and no one is upright among men. All of them lie in wait for bloodshed; each hunts his brother with a net.


“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites, because he was zealous for My sake among them, so I did not exterminate the Israelites in My zeal.


And it will be for him and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God and made an atonement for the Israelites.’ ”


His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.”


The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise up and begin to prostitute themselves after the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they are going to be among them, and will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them.


They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered around in sheepskins and goatskins, while destitute, afflicted, and tormented.
