God said, *Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;


Then the king's servants, who were in the king's gate, said to Mordekhai, *Why do you disobey the king's mitzvah?*


He answered them, *Why do you also disobey the mitzvah of God because of your tradition?


Now when they saw some of his talmidim eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.


The Perushim and the scribes asked him, *Why don't your talmidim walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?*


When the Parush saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed himself before dinner.


I advanced in traditional Judaism beyond many of my own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
