When they heard it, they marveled, and left him, and went away.


The chief Kohanim and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him. For they feared him, because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.


If we should say, 'From men'*--they feared the people, for all held Yochanan to really be a prophet.


The chief Kohanim and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people--for they knew he had spoken this parable against them.


But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that Yochanan was a prophet.*


Therefore some of them of Yerushalayim said, *Isn't this he whom they seek to kill?


They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.


Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.
