2 Yehoshua sent men from Yericho to `Ai, which is beside Beit-Aven, on the east side of Beit-El, and spoke to them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. The men went up and spied out `Ai.

He left from there to the mountain on the east of Beit-El, and pitched his tent, having Beit-El on the west, and `Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.


He called the name of that place Beit-El, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.


He set the one in Beit-El, and the other put he in Dan.


The children of Binyamin also [lived] from Geva [onward], at Mikhmash and Ayah, and at Beit-El and the towns of it,


Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!


for by wise guidance you wage your war; and victory is in many advisors.


He has come to `Ayat. He has passed through Migron. At Mikhmash he stores his baggage.


Wail, Cheshbon, for `Ai is laid waste; cry, you daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth: lament, and run back and forth among the fences; for Malkam shall go into captivity, his Kohanim and his princes together.


*Though you, Yisra'el, play the prostitute, yet don't let Yehudah offend; and don't come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beit-Aven, nor swear, 'As the LORD lives.'


*Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.


Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;


the king of Yericho, one; the king of `Ai, which is beside Beit-El, one;


Their border on the north quarter was from the Yarden; and the border went up to the side of Yericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward; and the goings out of it were at the wilderness of Beit-Aven.


Yehoshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Yericho. They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rachav, and lay there.


They returned to Yehoshua, and said to him, Don't let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike `Ai; don't make all the people to toil there; for they are but few.


The Pelishtim assembled themselves together to fight with Yisra'el, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Mikhmash, eastward of Beit-Aven.


So the LORD saved Yisra'el that day: and the battle passed over by Beit-Aven.
