Esav said to Ya`akov, *Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am famished.* Therefore his name was called Edom.


Esav hated Ya`akov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esav said in his heart, *The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Ya`akov.*


Ya`akov sent messengers in front of him to Esav, his brother, to the land of Se`ir, the field of Edom.


The sons of Elifaz were Teman, Omar, Tzefo, and Ga`tam, and Kenaz.


These are the chiefs of the sons of Esav: the sons of Elifaz the firstborn of Esav: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Tzefo, chief Kenaz,


Yovav died, and Chusham of the land of the Temani reigned in his place.


Esav lived in the hill country of Se`ir. Esav is Edom.

Now when Iyov's three friends heard of all this evil that had come on him, they each came from his own place: Elifaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuchite, and Tzofar the Na`amatite, and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and to comfort him.


Then Elifaz the Temanite answered,


Remember, LORD, against the children of Edom, the day of Yerushalayim; who said, *Raze it! Raze it even to its foundation!*


The burden of Dumah. One calls to me out of Se`ir, *Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?*


therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the understanding of their prudent men will be hidden.*


Thus says the LORD against all my evil neighbors, who touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Yisra'el to inherit: behold, I will pluck them up from off their land, and will pluck up the house of Yehudah from among them.


Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Yirmeyahu; for the law shall not perish from the Kohen, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.


Edom, and Mo'av, and the children of `Ammon;


Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all who have the corners [of their hair] cut off;


behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, says the LORD, and [I will send] to Nevukhadnetzar 1 the king of Bavel, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants of it, and against all these nations round about; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.


Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he has taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, [even] the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.


The wise men are disappointed, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what manner of wisdom is in them?


Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwell in the land of `Utz: The cup shall pass through to you also; you shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked.


There is Edom, her kings and all her princes, who in their might are laid with those who are slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with those who go down to the pit.


He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many [countries] shall be overthrown; but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom, and Mo'av, and the chief of the children of `Ammon.


Egypt will be a desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Yehudah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.


God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and his praise filled the earth.


You shall not abhor an Edomite; for he is your brother: you shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land.
