In the days of Pekach king of Yisra'el came Tiglat-Pil'eser king of Ashur, and took `Iyon, and Avel-Beit-Ma`akhah, and Yano`ach, and Kedesh, and Chatzor, and Gil`ad, and the Galil, all the land of Naftali; and he carried them captive to Ashur.


The king of Ashur listened to him; and the king of Ashur went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried [the people of] it captive to Kir, and killed Retzin.


Against him came up Shalman'eser king of Ashur; and Hoshea became his servant, and brought him tribute.


The burden of Damascus: *Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.


The fortress shall cease from Efrayim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria. They will be as the glory of the children of Yisra'el,* says the LORD of Armies.


The fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, shall be like the first-ripe fig before the summer; which someone picks and eats as soon as he sees it.


The LORD spoke to me yet again, saying,


Thus says the LORD: *For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have threshed Gil`ad with threshing instruments of iron;


I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him who holds the scepter from the house of `Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,* says the LORD.


Shouldn't I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can't discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?*


For being not yet born, neither having done anything good or bad, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him who calls,


Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be a prey, and your children, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and to them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
