May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,


who have said, *With our tongue we will prevail. Our lips are our own. Who is lord over us?*


*Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,* says the LORD; *I will set him in safety from those who malign him.*


They close up their callous hearts. With their mouth they speak proudly.


Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.


My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.


They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.


For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.


but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were turned aside like a deceitful bow.


For Yerushalayim is ruined, and Yehudah is fallen; because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.


Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Yirmeyahu; for the law shall not perish from the Kohen, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.


Yet for all this her treacherous sister Yehudah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but only in pretense, says the LORD.


For thus says the LORD of Armies, the God of Yisra'el: As my anger and my wrath has been poured forth on the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, so shall my wrath be poured forth on you, when you shall enter into Egypt; and you shall be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.


Thus says the Lord GOD: You will drink of your sister's cup, which is deep and large; you will be ridiculed and held in derision; it contains much.


When they came to the nations, where they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.


He shall speak words against the Elyon, and shall wear out the holy ones of the Elyon; and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.


*They won't return into the land of Egypt; but the Ashur will be their king, because they refused to repent.


My people are determined to turn from me. Though they call to the Elyon, he certainly won't exalt them.


*Efrayim, what shall I do to you? Yehudah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.


Woe to them! For they have wandered from me. Destruction to them! For they have trespassed against me. Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me.


They won't dwell in the LORD's land; but Efrayim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Ashur.


They won't pour out wine offerings to the LORD, neither will they be pleasing to him. Their sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat of it will be polluted; for their bread will be for their appetite. It will not come into the house of the LORD.


For, behold, they have gone away from destruction. Egypt will gather them up. Mof will bury them. Nettles will possess their pleasant things of silver. Thorns will be in their tents.


*Your words have been stout against me,* says the LORD. *Yet you say, 'What have we spoken against you?'


You have said, 'It is vain to serve God;' and 'What profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of Armies?


I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.


Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation.


So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!


(for that righteous man dwelling among them, was tormented in his righteous soul from day to day with seeing and hearing lawless deeds):


A mouth speaking great things and blasphemy was given to him. Authority to make war for forty-two months was given to him.
