Esav said to Ya`akov, *Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am famished.* Therefore his name was called Edom.


Ya`akov sent messengers in front of him to Esav, his brother, to the land of Se`ir, the field of Edom.


He commanded them, saying, *This is what you shall tell my lord, Esav: 'This is what your servant, Ya`akov, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Lavan, and stayed until now.


Now this is the history of the generations of Esav (that is, Edom).


chief Magdi'el, and chief `Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession. This is Esav, the father of the Edom.


This is the history of the generations of Esav the father of the Edom in the hill country of Se`ir:


Some of them, even of the sons of Shim`on, five hundred men, went to Mount Se`ir, having for their captains Pelatyah, and Ne`aryah, and Refayah, and `Uzzi'el, the sons of Yish`i.


Now, behold, the children of `Ammon and Mo'av and Mount Se`ir, whom you would not let Yisra'el invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and didn't destroy them;


For the children of `Ammon and Mo'av stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Se`ir, utterly to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Se`ir, everyone helped to destroy another.


Likewise when all the Jews who were in Mo'av, and among the children of `Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Bavel had left a remnant of Yehudah, and that he had set over them Gedalyahu the son of Achikam, the son of Shafan;


The vision of `Ovadyah This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom. We have heard news from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, *Arise, and let's rise up against her in battle.

as he did for the children of Esav, who dwell in Se`ir, when he destroyed the Chori from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place even to this day:


Command you the people, saying, You are to pass through the border of your brothers the children of Esav, who dwell in Se`ir; and they will be afraid of you: take good heed to yourselves therefore;


don't contend with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given Mount Se`ir to Esav for a possession.


I gave to Yitzchak Ya`akov and Esav: and I gave to Esav Mount Se`ir, to possess it: and Ya`akov and his children went down into Egypt.


Now when Sha'ul had taken the kingdom over Yisra'el, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Mo'av, and against the children of `Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Tzovah, and against the Pelishtim: and wherever he turned himself, he put [them] to the worse.
