The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shifrah, and the name of the other Pu`ah,


Par`oh charged all his people, saying, *You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.*


But the farmers, when they saw the son, said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and seize his inheritance.'


The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they wouldn't stay alive.
