Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness,


Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.


You turn man to destruction, saying, *Return, you children of men.*


For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.


Therefore I swore in my wrath, *They won't enter into my rest.*


Moreover also I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;


The LORD spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,


They went and came to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to all the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and shown them the fruit of the land.


Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya`akov; because they have not wholly followed me:


However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.


We traveled from Chorev, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amori, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-Barnea.


It is eleven days' [journey] from Chorev by the way of Mount Se`ir to Kadesh-Barnea.


So you abode in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you abode [there].


Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. We went over the brook Zered.


So it happened, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,


For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; he has known your walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.


When they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and you lived in the wilderness many days.


This is the cause why Yehoshua did circumcise: all the people who came forth out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came forth out of Egypt.


For the children of Yisra'el walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, even the men of war who came forth out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn't listen to the voice of the LORD: to whom the LORD swore that he wouldn't let them see the land which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.


Now I desire to remind you, though you already know this, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who didn't believe.
