Avshalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Avshalom called to him, and said, Of what city are you? He said, Your servant is of one of the tribes of Yisra'el.


Of the Izharites, Kananyah and his sons were for the outward business over Yisra'el, for officers and judges.


Moshe said to his father-in-law, *Because the people come to me to inquire of God.


They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moshe, but every small matter they judged themselves.


*If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished.


*If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman's husband demands and the judges allow.


*If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible.


If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.


If the thief isn't found, then the master of the house shall come near to God, to find out if he hasn't put his hand to his neighbor's goods.


In a controversy they shall stand to judge; according to my ordinances shall they judge it: and they shall keep my laws and my statutes in all my appointed feasts; and they shall make my Shabbatot holy.


*Thus says the LORD of Armies: Ask now the Kohanim concerning the Torah, saying,


For the Kohen's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of Armies.


then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.


But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.


You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike; you shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.


then it shall happen that to the place which the LORD your God shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there, there shall you bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the wave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which you vow to the LORD.


but in the place which the LORD shall choose in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.


But to the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes, to put his name there, even to his habitation shall you seek, and there you shall come;


then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the Kohanim and the judges who shall be in those days;


This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him in time past;


The Kohanim the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and according to their word shall every controversy and every stroke be.


If there be a controversy between men, and they come to judgment, and [the judges] judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked;
