Therefore he called that place Be'er-Sheva, because they both swore there.


Avraham planted a tamarisk tree in Be'er-Sheva, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.


He went up from there to Be'er-Sheva.


He called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Be'er-Sheva to this day.


Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Yerushalayim: see your gods, Yisra'el, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.


He set the one in Beit-El, and the other put he in Dan.


He brought all the Kohanim out of the cities of Yehudah, and defiled the high places where the Kohanim had burned incense, from Geva to Be'er-Sheva; and he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Yehoshua the governor of the city, which were on a man's left hand at the gate of the city.


Those who hate you shall be clothed with shame. The tent of the wicked shall be no more.*


The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.


For the ruthless is brought to nothing, and the scoffer ceases, and all those who are alert to do evil are cut off--


Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand: for God is with us.*


Mo'av shall be ashamed of Kemosh, as the house of Yisra'el was ashamed of Beit-El their confidence.


The high places also of Aven, the sin of Yisra'el, will be destroyed. The thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars. They will tell the mountains, *Cover us!* and the hills, *Fall on us!*


If Gil`ad is wicked, surely they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls. Indeed, their altars are like heaps in the furrows of the field.


*Though you, Yisra'el, play the prostitute, yet don't let Yehudah offend; and don't come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beit-Aven, nor swear, 'As the LORD lives.'


*All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house! I will love them no more. All their princes are rebels.


I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him who holds the scepter from the house of `Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity to Kir,* says the LORD.


*For in the day that I visit the transgressions of Yisra'el on him, I will also visit the altars of Beit-El; and the horns of the altar will be cut off, and fall to the ground.


*Go to Beit-El, and sin; to Gilgal, and sin more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days,


Then Amatzyah the Kohen of Beit-El sent to Yarov`am king of Yisra'el, saying, *`Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Yisra'el. The land is not able to bear all his words.


but don't prophesy again any more at Beit-El; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house!*


Therefore thus says the LORD: 'Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Yisra'el shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'*


The high places of Yitzchak will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Yisra'el will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Yarov`am with the sword.*


Those who swear by the sin of Shomron, and say, 'As your god, Dan, lives;' and, 'As the way of Be'er-Sheva lives;' they will fall, and never rise up again.*


and God chose the lowly things of the world, and the things that are despised, and the things that are not, that he might bring to nothing the things that are:


We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown; yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to nothing.


You shall father sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for they shall go into captivity.


The LORD said to Yehoshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day.


For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.' Every shipmaster, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far away,


Then said Shemu'el to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.


He went from year to year in circuit to Beit-El and Gilgal, and Mitzpah; and he judged Yisra'el in all those places.


Now the name of his firstborn was Yo'el; and the name of his second, Aviyah: they were judges in Be'er-Sheva.
