It happened after this, that Avshalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.


So Yo'av arose and went to Geshur, and brought Avshalom to Yerushalayim.


The king said, Let him turn to his own house, but let him not see my face. So Avshalom turned to his own house, and didn't see the king's face.


Avshalom answered Yo'av, Behold, I sent to you, saying, Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, Why am I come from Geshur? it were better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him kill me.


It happened at the end of forty years, that Avshalom said to the king, please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the LORD, in Chevron.


For your servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall indeed bring me again to Yerushalayim, then I will serve the LORD.


The king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, my son Avshalom, my son, my son Avshalom! would I had died for you, Avshalom, my son, my son!


So David went up there, and his two wives also, Achino'am the Yizre`elite, and Avigayil the wife of Naval the Karmelite.


His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why have you done so? and he was also a very goodly man; and he was born after Avshalom.


He said, You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Yisra'el set their faces on me, that I should reign: however the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's; for it was his from the LORD.


Now these were the sons of David, who were born to him in Chevron: the firstborn, Amnon, of Achino'am the Yizre`elite; the second, Daniyel, of Avigayil the Karmelite;


the third, Avshalom the son of Ma`akhah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adoniyahu the son of Chaggit;


Ya'ir the son of Menasheh took all the region of Argov, to the border of the Geshuri and the Ma`akhati, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Chavvot-Ya'ir, to this day.)


Nevertheless the children of Yisra'el didn't drive out the Geshuri, nor the Ma`akhati: but Geshur and Ma`akhat dwell in the midst of Yisra'el to this day.


Now the name of the man was Naval; and the name of his wife Avigayil; and the woman was of good understanding, and of a beautiful face: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Kalev.


Avigayil hurried, and arose, and rode on a donkey, with five ladies of hers who followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.


David and his men went up, and made a raid on the Geshuri, and the Gizri, and the `Amaleki; for those [nations] were the inhabitants of the land, who were of old, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.
