Natan departed to his house. The LORD struck the child that Uriyah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick.


He said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knows whether the LORD will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?


Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn.


It happened, when Ach'av heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.


It happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,


*Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.*


Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.*


When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.


In that day, the Lord, the LORD of Armies, called to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth:


LORD, in trouble they have visited you. They poured out a prayer when your chastening was on them.


Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.


I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.


Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?*


He was without sight for three days, and neither ate nor drank.


Yehoshua tore his clothes, and fell to the dirt on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Yisra'el; and they put dust on their heads.
