For we must needs die, and are as water split on the ground, which can't be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.


It happened after this, that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up, and besieged Shomron.


They rose up in the twilight, to go to the camp of the Syrians; and when they were come to the outermost part of the camp of the Syrians, behold, there was no man there.


Of Menasheh also there fell away some to David, when he came with the Pelishtim against Sha'ul to battle: but they didn't help them; for the lords of the Pelishtim sent him away after consultation, saying, He will fall away to his master Sha'ul to the jeopardy of our heads.


*Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.*


If I go forth into the field, then, behold, the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then, behold, those who are sick with famine! for both the prophet and the Kohen go about in the land, and have no knowledge.


Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there; for the LORD our God has put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.


Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?*


Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,
