Sarai was barren. She had no child.


Now Sarai, Avram's wife, bore him no children. She had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.


For the LORD had closed up tight all the wombs of the house of Avimelekh, because of Sarah, Avraham's wife.


When Rachel saw that she bore Ya`akov no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Ya`akov, *Give me children, or else I will die.*


Ya`akov's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, *Am I in God's place, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?*


He sent portions to them from before him, but Binyamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.
