It happened at noon, that Eliyahu mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleeps and must be awakened.


The residue of it he makes a god, even his engraved image; he falls down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, Deliver me; for you are my god.


Baldness is come on `Aza; Ashkelon is brought to nothing, the remnant of their valley: how long will you cut yourself?


*'You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you. I am the LORD.


Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?


One will say to him, 'What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'


Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.


Often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.*


You are the children of the LORD your God: you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.
