Behold, there came a man of God out of Yehudah by the word of the LORD to Beit-El: and Yarov`am was standing by the altar to burn incense.


When the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king drew near to the altar, and offered thereon.


So they feared the LORD, and made to them from among themselves Kohanim of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.


but sought to the God of his father, and walked in his mitzvot, and not after the doings of Yisra'el.


He went forth and warred against the Pelishtim, and broke down the wall of Gat, and the wall of Yavneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in [the country of] Ashdod, and among the Pelishtim.


Thus were they defiled with their works, and prostituted themselves in their deeds.


The Lord said, *Because this people draws near with their mouth and with their lips to honor me, but they have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a mitzvah of men which has been taught;


and it shall be to you for a tzitzit, that you may look on it, and remember all the mitzvot of the LORD, and do them; and that you not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to play the prostitute;


he shall not honor his father or mother.' You have made the mitzvah of God void because of your tradition.
