17 David said to God, Isn't it I who commanded the people to be numbered? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.

Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, a bondservant to my lord; and let the boy go up with his brothers.


Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriyah the Chittite to be your wife.'


Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Yisra'el, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Yisra'el and Yehudah.


David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father's house.


Now therefore thus shall you tell my servant David, Thus says the LORD of Armies, I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people, over Yisra'el;


He said, I saw all Yisra'el scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in shalom.


David said to God, I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing: but now, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.


You have made us like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations.


Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness.


Against you, and you only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight; that you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.


you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,


that you may remember, and be confounded, and never open your mouth any more, because of your shame, when I have forgiven you all that you have done, says the Lord GOD.


He said to them, *Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.*


For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Messiah for my brothers' sake, my relatives according to the flesh,


that you must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing you rebel today against the LORD, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Yisra'el.


By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
