When the children of `Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of `Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beit-Rechov, and the Syrians of Tzovah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Ma`akhah with one thousand men, and the men of Tov twelve thousand men.


David took from him one thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for one hundred chariots.


When David heard of it, he sent Yo'av, and all the army of the mighty men.


There came out against them Zerach the Kushite with an army of a million troops, and three hundred chariots; and he came to Mareshah.


The Egyptians pursued after them: all the horses and chariots of Par`oh, his horsemen, and his army; and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-Hachirot, before Ba`al-Tzefon.


They have gone up to Bayit, and to Divon, to the high places, to weep. Mo'av wails over Nevo 1 and over Medeva. Baldness is on all of their heads. Every beard is cut off.


We have shot at them. Cheshbon has perished even to Divon. We have laid waste even to Nofach 1, Which reaches to Medeva.*
