13 While Joshua was near Jericho, he suddenly saw a man standing in front of him, holding a sword. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you one of our soldiers, or an enemy?”

The Lord appeared to Abraham at the sacred trees of Mamre. As Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the hottest part of the day,


he looked up and saw three men standing there. As soon as he saw them, he ran out to meet them. Bowing down with his face touching the ground,


Jacob woke up and said, “The Lord is here! He is in this place, and I didn't know it!”


Jacob saw Esau coming with his four hundred men, so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two concubines.


When Esau looked around and saw the women and the children, he asked, “Who are these people with you?” “These, sir, are the children whom God has been good enough to give me,” Jacob answered.


Almost every day new men joined David's forces, so that his army was soon enormous.


The Lord told the angel to put his sword away, and the angel obeyed.


but David was not able to go there to worship God, because he was afraid of the sword of the Lord's angel.

I saw someone riding a red horse. He had stopped among some myrtle trees in a valley, and behind him were other horses—red, dappled, and white.


When the donkey saw the angel standing there holding a sword, it left the road and turned into the fields. Balaam beat the donkey and brought it back onto the road.


Then the Lord let Balaam see the angel standing there with his sword; and Balaam threw himself face downward on the ground.


They still had their eyes fixed on the sky as he went away, when two men dressed in white suddenly stood beside them


The Lord said to Joshua, “I am putting into your hands Jericho, with its king and all its brave soldiers.


and among them there was what looked like a human being, wearing a robe that reached to his feet, and a gold band around his chest.


Manoah got up and followed his wife. He went to the man and asked, “Are you the man who talked to my wife?” “Yes,” he answered.


Manoah said to his wife, “We are sure to die, because we have seen God!”
