These are the names of David's famous soldiers: the first was Josheb Basshebeth from Tachemon, who was the leader of “The Three”; he fought with his spear against eight hundred men and killed them all in one battle.


They put their trust in God and prayed to him for help, and God answered their prayers and made them victorious over the Hagrites and their allies.


They killed many of the enemy, because the war was God's will. And they went on living in that territory until the exile.


Oppose those who oppose me, Lord, and fight those who fight against me!


The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.


The Lord will fight for you, and all you have to do is keep still.”


A thousand of you will run away when you see one enemy soldier, and five soldiers will be enough to make you all run away. Nothing will be left of your army except a lonely flagpole on the top of a hill.


You will be victorious over your enemies;


five of you will be able to defeat a hundred, and a hundred will be able to defeat ten thousand.


At that time the Lord will protect those who live in Jerusalem, and even the weakest among them will become as strong as David was. The descendants of David will lead them like the angel of the Lord, like God himself.


In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us?


‘Men of Israel, listen! Today you are going into battle. Do not be afraid of your enemies or lose courage or panic.


The Lord your God is going with you, and he will give you victory.’


“The Lord will defeat your enemies when they attack you. They will attack from one direction, but they will run from you in all directions.


Don't be afraid of them, for the Lord your God will fight for you.’


‘I will no longer help them,’ he said; ‘then I will see what happens to them, those stubborn, unfaithful people.


Why were a thousand defeated by one, and ten thousand by only two? The Lord, their God, had abandoned them; their mighty God had given them up.


Joshua conquered all these kings and their territory in one campaign because the Lord, Israel's God, was fighting for Israel.


Be careful, then, to love the Lord your God.


You have seen everything that the Lord your God has done to all these nations because of you. The Lord your God has been fighting for you.


Then he found a jawbone of a donkey that had recently died. He reached down and picked it up, and killed a thousand men with it.


The next leader was Shamgar son of Anath. He too rescued Israel, and did so by killing six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.


Jonathan said to the young man, “Let's cross over to the camp of those heathen Philistines. Maybe the Lord will help us; if he does, nothing can keep him from giving us the victory, no matter how few of us there are.”
