16 In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim,  but he was residing in Gibeah where the people were Benjaminites.

You will eat bread  by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.’


Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labour  will multiply it.


There is profit in all hard work, but endless talk  leads only to poverty.


Complete your outdoor work, and prepare your field; afterwards, build your house.


I applied my mind to examine  and explore through wisdom all that is done under heaven.  God has given people  this miserable task to keep them occupied.


The sleep of the worker is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich permits him no sleep.


They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; he will punish their sins.


Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share  with anyone in need.


In fact, when we were with you, this is what we commanded you: ‘If anyone isn’t willing to work, he should not eat.’


In those days, when there was no king in Israel,  a Levite staying in a remote part of the hill country of Ephraim acquired a woman from Bethlehem in Judah as his concubine.


So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.


They stopped  to go in and spend the night in Gibeah. The Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one took them into their home to spend the night.


When he looked up and saw the traveller in the city square, the old man asked, ‘Where are you going, and where do you come from? ’
