3 One day, Samuel told all the people of Israel, “If you really want to turn back to the Lord, then prove it. Get rid of your foreign idols, including the ones of the goddess Astarte. Turn to the Lord with all your heart and worship only him. Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”

Jacob said to his family and to everyone else who was traveling with him: Get rid of your foreign gods! Then make yourselves acceptable to worship God and put on clean clothes.


“Solomon and the Israelites are not like their ancestor David. They will not listen to me, obey me, or do what is right. They have turned from me to worship Astarte the goddess of Sidon, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of Ammon.


except me. I am the Lord your God, and I will rescue you from all your enemies.


But Josiah was not finished yet. At Bethel he destroyed the shrine and the altar that Jeroboam son of Nebat had built and that had caused the Israelites to sin. Josiah had the shrine and the Asherah pole burned and ground into dust.


Obey the Lord your God with your heart and soul. Begin work on the temple to honor him, so that the sacred chest and the things used for worship can be kept there.


Solomon, my son, worship God and obey him with all your heart and mind, just as I have done. He knows all your thoughts and your reasons for doing things, and so if you turn to him, he will hear your prayers. But if you ignore him, he will reject you forever.


But not everything about you is bad. You destroyed the sacred poles used in worshiping the goddess Asherah—that shows you have tried to obey the Lord.


but he did not destroy the local shrines. So the people still worshiped foreign gods, instead of faithfully serving the God their ancestors had worshiped.


We humans make plans, but the Lord has the final word.


Give up your evil ways and your evil thoughts. Return to the Lord our God. He will be merciful and forgive your sins.


I will give them a desire to know me and to be my people. They will want me to be their God, and they will turn back to me with all their heart.

The Lord said: Israel, if you really want to come back to me, get rid of those disgusting idols.


Now, Ezekiel, tell everyone in Israel: I am the Lord God. Stop worshiping those idols I hate so much and come back to me.


Give up your evil ways and start thinking pure thoughts. And be faithful to me! Do you really want to be put to death for your sins?


Israel, return! Come back to the Lord, your God. Sin has made you fall.


“All of you praise me with your words, but you never really think about me.


Jesus answered, “Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”


You cannot be the slave of two masters! You will like one more than the other or be more loyal to one than the other. You cannot serve both God and money.


Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’ ”


God is Spirit, and those who worship God must be led by the Spirit to worship him according to the truth.


Respect the Lord your God, be faithful, and serve only him, making promises in his name.


You must be completely faithful to the Lord. Worship and obey only the Lord and do this with fear and trembling,


In all of your troubles, you may finally decide that you want to worship only the Lord. And if you turn back to him and obey him completely, he will again be your God.


Worship and obey the Lord your God with fear and trembling, and promise that you will be loyal to him.


Then Joshua told the people: Worship the Lord, obey him, and always be faithful. Get rid of the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt.


Joshua said, “But you still have some idols, like those the other nations worship. Get rid of your idols! You must decide once and for all that you really want to obey the Lord God of Israel.”


Then the Israelites got rid of the idols of the foreign gods, and they began worshiping only the Lord. Finally, there came a time when the Lord could no longer stand to see them suffer.


Before long, the Israelites began disobeying the Lord by worshiping Baal, Astarte, and gods from Syria, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia.


The Lord had brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and they had worshiped him. But now the Israelites stopped worshiping the Lord and worshiped the idols of Baal and Astarte, as well as the idols of other gods from nearby nations. The Lord was so angry
