Reuben, thou art my first-born, my might, and the beginning of my strength; The pre-eminence of dignity, and the pre-eminence of power.


Israel also came into Egypt;\par\tab And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.


They set among them his signs,\par\tab And wonders in the land of Ham.


He smote also all the first-born in their land,\par\tab The chief of all their strength.


Wondrous works in the land of Ham,\par\tab {\i And} terrible things by the Red Sea.


Who smote the first-born of Egypt,\par\tab Both of man and beast;

and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that Jehovah slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast: therefore I sacrifice to Jehovah all that openeth the womb, being males; but all the first-born of my sons I redeem.


By faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
