And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.


And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.


Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made fifty cubits high, and in the morning speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.\par


So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.\par


but when {\i the matter} came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.\par


Thou hast seen {\i it}; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand:\par\tab The helpless committeth {\i himself} unto thee;\par\tab Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.


Jehovah preserveth all them that love him;\par\tab But all the wicked will he destroy.


Jehovah upholdeth the meek:\par\tab He bringeth the wicked down to the ground.


With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure;\par\tab And with the perverse thou wilt show thyself froward.


A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows,\par\tab Is God in his holy habitation.


Jehovah will root up the house of the proud;\par\tab But he will establish the border of the widow.


The way of the wicked is as darkness:\par\tab They know not at what they stumble.\par


Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.


Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, {\i Ye are} our gods; for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.\par


And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner {\i from his right}, and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts.


For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, {\b He that taketh the wise in their craftiness}:


and thou shalt rejoice before Jehovah thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the sojourner, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are in the midst of thee, in the place which Jehovah thy God shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there.


Pure religion and undefiled before {\i our} God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, {\i and} to keep oneself unspotted from the world.\par
