They have set thy sanctuary on fire;\par\tab They have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name {\i by casting it} to the ground.


In Salem also is his tabernacle,\par\tab And his dwelling-place in Zion.


Why hast thou broken down its walls,\par\tab So that all they that pass by the way do pluck it?


Thou hast broken down all his hedges;\par\tab Thou hast brought his strongholds to ruin.


Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; new moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies,—I cannot away with iniquity and the solemn meeting.


And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.


Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary; and I will make Jacob a curse, and Israel a reviling.\par


And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; I will break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:


and I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned nor hoed; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.


Thy holy people possessed {\i it} but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.


Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned with fire; and all our pleasant places are laid waste.


But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.\par


For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: As mine anger and my wrath hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my wrath be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt; and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.


Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land.


The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple.\par


The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly;\par\tab All her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh:\par\tab Her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.


The anger of Jehovah hath scattered them; he will no more regard them:\par\tab They respected not the persons of the priests, they favored not the elders.\par


The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits;\par\tab Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.\par


Princes were hanged up by their hand:\par\tab The faces of elders were not honored.


For he hath despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet hath done all these things; he shall not escape.


And I will make your cities a waste, and will bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savor of your sweet odors.


I will gather them that sorrow for the solemn assembly, who were of thee; {\i to whom} the burden upon her was a reproach.


Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have had respect of persons in the law.\par
