Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.


An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips;\par\tab And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.


And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?


And the inhabitant of this coast-land shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and we, how shall we escape?\par


The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the godless ones: Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?


Thy first father sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.


And thou saidst, I shall be mistress for ever; so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end thereof.\par


How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of the whole country wither? for the wickedness of them that dwell therein, the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our latter end.\par


Then Jehovah said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name; I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake I unto them: they prophesy unto you a lying vision, and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their own heart.


And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Jehovah.\par


Her filthiness was in her skirts; she remembered not her latter end;\par\tab Therefore is she come down wonderfully; she hath no comforter:\par\tab Behold, O Jehovah, my affliction; for the enemy hath magnified himself.


Thy prophets have seen for thee false and foolish visions;\par\tab And they have not uncovered thine iniquity, to bring back thy captivity,\par\tab But have seen for thee false oracles and causes of banishment.


{\i It is} because of the sins of her prophets, {\i and} the iniquities of her priests,\par\tab That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.


They hunt our steps, so that we cannot go in our streets:\par\tab Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.


Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there is no peace; and when one buildeth up a wall, behold, they daub it with untempered {\i mortar}:


They have seen falsehood and lying divination, that say, Jehovah saith; but Jehovah hath not sent them: and they have made men to hope that the word would be confirmed.


Can thy heart endure, or can thy hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I, Jehovah, have spoken it, and will do it.


And it shall be, like people, like priest; and I will punish them for their ways, and will requite them their doings.


In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing: there whoredom is {\i found} in Ephraim, Israel is defiled.


What will ye do in the day of solemn assembly, and in the day of the feast of Jehovah?


If a man walking in a spirit of falsehood do lie, {\i saying}, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.\par


Prophesy ye not, {\i thus} they prophesy. They shall not prophesy to these: reproaches shall not depart.


The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us.


Her prophets are light and treacherous persons; her priests have profaned the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.


And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: For they are a very perverse generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness.


Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, That they would consider their latter end!
