and Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.


And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.


And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the field of Edom.


And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.


These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the first-born of Esau: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz,


And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.


And Esau dwelt in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him.


Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,


Remember, O Jehovah, against the children of Edom\par\tab The day of Jerusalem;\par\tab Who said, Rase it, rase it,\par\tab Even to the foundation thereof.


The burden of Dumah.\par\tab One calleth unto me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?


therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.\par


Thus saith Jehovah against all mine evil neighbors, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit: Behold, I will pluck them up from off their land, and will pluck up the house of Judah from among them.


Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.\par


Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon;


Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that have the corners {\i of their hair} cut off;


behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith Jehovah, and {\i I will send} unto Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.


Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, {\i even} the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.


The wise men are put to shame, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of Jehovah; and what manner of wisdom is in them?


Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz:\par\tab The cup shall pass through unto thee also; thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.


There is Edom, her kings and all her princes, who in their might are laid with them that are slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.


He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many {\i countries} shall be overthrown; but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.


Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.


God came from Teman,\par\tab And the Holy One from mount Paran. {\i Selah\par\tab His glory covered the heavens,\par\tab And the earth was full of his praise.


Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother: thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian, because thou wast a sojourner in his land.
