Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou art melted away, O Philistia, all of thee; for there cometh a smoke out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.\par


For the palace shall be forsaken; the populous city shall be deserted; the hill and the watch-tower shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;


But it shall hail in the downfall of the forest; and the city shall be utterly laid low.


I will go before thee, and make the rough places smooth; I will break in pieces the doors of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron;


And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.\par


How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people!\par\tab She is become as a widow, that was great among the nations!\par\tab She that was a princess among the provinces is become tributary!


The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn assembly;\par\tab All her gates are desolate, her priests do sigh:\par\tab Her virgins are afflicted, and she herself is in bitterness.


Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars:\par\tab Her king and her princes are among the nations where the law is not;\par\tab Yea, her prophets find no vision from Jehovah.


For the mountain of Zion, which is desolate:\par\tab The foxes walk upon it.\par


For the inhabitant of Maroth waiteth anxiously for good, because evil is come down from Jehovah unto the gate of Jerusalem.


For her wounds are incurable; for it is come even unto Judah; it reacheth unto the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.


But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
