{\b A Song of Ascents.}\par\par\tab Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth up,\par\tab Let Israel now say,


Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.


And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, Israel is my son, my first-born:


and I have said unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me; and thou hast refused to let him go: behold, I will slay thy son, thy first-born.


Since thou hast been precious in my sight, {\i and} honorable, and I have loved thee; therefore will I give men in thy stead, and peoples instead of thy life.


I have forsaken my house, I have cast off my heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.


Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, I remember for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals; how thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.


And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast weltering in thy blood.\par


And when I passed by thee, and saw thee weltering in thy blood, I said unto thee, {\i Though thou art} in thy blood, live; yea, I said unto thee, {\i Though thou art} in thy blood, live.


So shall Beth-el do unto you because of your great wickedness: at daybreak shall the king of Israel be utterly cut off.\par


And by a prophet Jehovah brought Israel up out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.


But I am Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt; I will yet again make thee to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast.


Yet I am Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt; and thou shalt know no god but me, and besides me there is no saviour.


And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall make answer there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.


I have loved you, saith Jehovah. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother, saith Jehovah: yet I loved Jacob;


and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, {\b Out of Egypt did I call my son.}\par


Yea, he loveth the people; All his saints are in thy hand: And they sat down at thy feet; Every one shall receive of thy words.


Jehovah did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all peoples:
