I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;


It is good for me that I have been afflicted;\par\tab That I may learn thy statutes.


I know, O Jehovah, that thy judgments are righteous,\par\tab And that in faithfulness thou hast afflicted me.


Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Jehovah,\par\tab And teachest out of thy law;


He that spareth his rod hateth his son;\par\tab But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.


My son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah;\par\tab Neither be weary of his reproof:


For whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth;\par\tab Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.\par


Therefore by this shall the iniquity of Jacob be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, {\i so that} the Asherim and the sun-images shall rise no more.


O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.


Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?\par


And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so Jehovah thy God chasteneth thee.


Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which {\i the Lord} promised to them that love him.


Behold, we call them blessed that endured: ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord, how that the Lord is full of pity, and merciful.\par


As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
