5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for Jehovah must be exceeding magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.

And now, O Jehovah my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in.


And though this house is so high, yet shall every one that passeth by it be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath Jehovah done thus unto this land, and to this house?


And David the king said unto all the assembly, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great; for the palace is not for man, but for Jehovah God.


And there were gathered unto him worthless men, base fellows, that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender-hearted, and could not withstand them.


Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him incense of sweet spices, and for the continual showbread, and for the burnt-offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the set feasts of Jehovah our God. This is {\i an ordinance} for ever to Israel.


And the house which I build is great; for great is our God above all gods.


Send me also cedar-trees, fir-trees, and algum-trees, out of Lebanon; for I know that thy servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon. And, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,


And this house, which is so high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall say, Why hath Jehovah done thus unto this land, and to this house?


But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' {\i houses}, the old men that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:


For I was a son unto my father,\par\tab Tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.


Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do {\i it} with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.\par


Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned with fire; and all our pleasant places are laid waste.


As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty; but they made the images of their abominations {\i and} their detestable things therein: therefore have I made it unto them as an unclean thing.


Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing?


The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts.\par


And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and offerings, he said,


Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto his Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end.


He must increase, but I must decrease.\par


We must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
