Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.


So Ezra rose up and made the leading kohanim, the Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do according to this word; and they took the oath.


He led them to safety, so they did not fear, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.


Now listen to my voice—I will give you advice, and may God be with you! You, represent the people before God, and bring their cases to God.


If you do this thing as God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people will go to their places in shalom.”


Moses chose capable men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
