When Joab left David, he sent messengers after Abner, so they brought him back from the well of Sirah, though David knew nothing about it.


When David heard about it afterward, he said, “I and my kingdom are innocent before Adonai forever from the blood of Abner son of Ner.


Now when Saul’s son heard that Abner had died in Hebron, his courage sank, and all the Israelites were disturbed.


Thus Adonai will return his blood on his own head, because he struck down two men more righteous and better than he—Abner son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah—and killed them with the sword, without my father David’s knowledge.
