After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.


Seeing in the distance a fig tree that had leaves, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.


In the morning, as they went along, they saw that the fig tree had withered from its roots.


where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. He ate nothing in those days, and afterward, when they had ended, he was hungry.


After this, when Jesus saw that everything was now finished, in order to fulfill the Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”


Therefore he had to become like his brothers in every way, so that he could be a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people.
