Nay, for thy sake we are slain all the day long, and accounted as sheep for the slaughter.


There they are, in great terror, in terror such as has not been! For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly; they will be put to shame, for God has rejected them.


As it is written, “For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”


Why, we felt that we had received the sentence of death; but that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead;


They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—
