While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city Giloh. The conspiracy grew in strength, and the people with Absalom kept increasing.


All my intimate friends abhor me, and those whom I loved have turned against me.


But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.


But it is you, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend,


with whom I kept pleasant company; we walked in the house of God with the throng.


Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by.


For I hear many whispering: “Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. “Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him.”
