He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”


May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward.


Let all those who rejoice at my calamity be put to shame and confusion; let those who exalt themselves against me be clothed with shame and dishonor.


Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek to hurt me speak of ruin, and meditate treachery all day long.


All day long my tongue will talk of your righteous help, for those who tried to do me harm have been put to shame, and disgraced.


Let them know that you alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth.


Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth; I will turn you back on the way by which you came.
