He said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” So he had him ride in his chariot.


But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?


Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’


“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.


“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.


But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.


Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.


But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.


since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.


Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.


By no means! Although everyone is a liar, let God be proved true, as it is written, “So that you may be justified in your words, and prevail in your judging.”
