“If you direct your heart rightly, you will stretch out your hands toward him.
Are the consolations of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?
He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear by adversity.
He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no constraint, and what was set on your table was full of fatness.
The Lord has punished me severely, but he did not give me over to death.
Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,
Indeed I heard Ephraim pleading: “You disciplined me, and I took the discipline; I was like a calf untrained. Bring me back, let me come back, for you are the Lord my God.
Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you.
Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
Indeed we call blessed those who showed endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
