Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.


now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but as I have dealt loyally with you, you will deal with me and with the land where you have resided as an alien.”


When Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized,


And he said, “Swear to me”; and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself on the head of his bed.


If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.


Human beings, of course, swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all dispute.
