But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan:


At the king's command, they quarried out great, costly stones in order to lay the foundation of the house with dressed stones.


“Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes, obey my ordinances, and keep all my commandments by walking in them, then I will establish my promise with you, which I made to your father David.


Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: You shall not build me a house to live in.


But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, for you are a warrior and have shed blood.’


The plans of the mind belong to mortals, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.
