Here we are, slaves to this day—slaves in the land that you gave to our ancestors to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts.


Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power.


O Lord our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but we acknowledge your name alone.


Correct me, O Lord, but in just measure; not in your anger, or you will bring me to nothing.


Though they bargain with the nations, I will now gather them up. They shall soon writhe under the burden of kings and princes.


Now these are the nations that the Lord left to test all those in Israel who had no experience of any war in Canaan


(it was only that successive generations of Israelites might know war, to teach those who had no experience of it before):
