These were the descendants of Levi by their families – the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the Lord.
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.
Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.
Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they set up camp, each in their own place under their standard.
But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.’
But Moses did not give any to the Kohathites, because they were to carry on their shoulders the holy things, for which they were responsible.
