where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.


The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.


But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, ‘You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?


Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.


Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’


‘Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?’ ‘Caesar’s,’ they replied.


Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, ‘Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?


But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, ‘Get up and stand in front of everyone.’ So he got up and stood there.


‘You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?


We should not test Christ, as some of them did – and were killed by snakes.


For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’;


Then we will no longer be infants, tossed to and fro by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.


Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
